The General Secretariat of the Arab League, specifically the Social Affairs sector, signed a joint action plan with the Regional Office of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) for the year 2024.
The agreement aims to enhance cooperation between the two entities. The signing was officiated by Haifa Abu Ghazaleh, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of Social Affairs at the Arab League, and Layla Baker, the Regional Director of the UNFPA for Arab States.
Focus of Action Plan
The action plan emphasizes the implementation of various social and developmental policies, plans, and programs previously agreed upon within the framework of the Arab joint social development system.
It also focuses on bolstering the efforts of Arab countries in implementing relevant international treaties and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.
Ambassador Abu Ghazaleh, in her statement after the signing, highlighted these points, stressing the comprehensive approach of the action plan in addressing social, humanitarian, and health situations.
Priorities in Action Plan
The plan gives special attention to the social, humanitarian, and health conditions in the Gaza Strip and the occupied Palestinian territories. These conditions formed a major part of the consultations during the plan’s formulation.
Furthermore, the plan prioritizes addressing the needs of persons with disabilities, the elderly, youth, and policies related to women’s empowerment. It also focuses on issues concerning families, childhood, and health.
Partnership Between Arab League, UNFPA
Layla Baker, Regional Director of UNFPA for Arab States, highlighted the partnership’s importance. She labeled the action plan as a foundational step to enhance collaboration.
