Turkey to Host COP31 Climate Summit, Australia to Lead Government Talks

Under a compromise deal outlined by talks in Brazil, Turkey will host next year’s UN climate summit, while Australia will lead the intergovernmental negotiations, according to Reuters.

This deal would end the current stalemate between Canberra and Ankara over which country would lead the world’s main forum for driving climate action.

“What we’ve come up with is a big win for both Australia and Turkey,” Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Thursday.

“It would be great if Australia could have it all. But we can’t have it all,” Australia’s Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said on Wednesday. “It was important to strike an agreement.”

On Monday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese utterly rejected the suggestion of co-hosting with Ankara.

“That’s not an option, and people are aware that it is not an option, which is why it has been ruled out,” Albanese said.

Meanwhile, a Turkish diplomatic source told AFP over the weekend that Ankara still calls for “a co-presidency model.” However, it could host the summit alone if they did not reach consensus.

Australia seeks to host the summit in the southern city of Adelaide alongside its Pacific Island neighbors. This would enable it to showcase a part of the world that is suffering the effects of climate change.

Turkey bids to host COP31 to address the world’s most vulnerable regions, with potential special sessions focusing on Pacific issues.

Based on the compromise, Turkey would host COP31 as summit president. Meanwhile, the Pacific and Australia would head a pre-COP event as president of negotiations.
