US President Donald Trump is expected to visit Jerusalem on Sunday, according to a statement from the office of Israel’s President Isaac Herzog, Reuters reported.
The statement noted that events scheduled on Sunday were cancelled “in light of the expected release of the hostages, and… the upcoming visit of President of the United States Donald J Trump to Israel.”
Trump’s visit follows his announcement that both Israel and Hamas had agreed to a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal.
“The decision was made due to anticipated security closures in Jerusalem surrounding the visit and the historic developments unfolding in the coming days,” the statement reads.
Moreover, the US leader said earlier that he may address the Knesset during his anticipated visit to Israel.
“I am expected to arrive in Israel in the coming days. They want me to speak in the Knesset, and I will certainly do so if they want it,” Trump said.
The visit also comes after Hamas unveiled that it has reached a hostage-ceasefire agreement with Israel during indirect talks in Egypt.
The Palestinian group added that the exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners would take place within 72 hours of the agreement’s implementation.
During the first phase of a broad deal to end the two-year war on Gaza, 20 surviving hostages will be exchanged for approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners.
