Trump’s Personal Commitment is Foremost Guarantee for Implementing Gaza Plan: Egyptian FM
Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty said that the US President Donald Trump’s personal commitment is the only guarantee for implementing his peace plan to end Gaza War, according to Asharq Al-Awsat.
Trump’s Gaza Peace Plan
Abdelatty told Asharq Al-Awsat that Trump “clearly stated and reaffirmed his personal commitment to carrying out the plan and achieving security, stability, and peace in the Middle East.”
In August, Abdelatty and the Egyptian Prime Minster Mostafa Madbouly, took part in a significant meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
The meeting witnessed the participation of many Arab and Islamic leaders, including representatives from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Turkey.
New Negotiations
The FM’s remarks come just ahead of a new round of negotiations in Cairo on Monday, where Israel and Hamas are set to discuss the first phase of Trump’s plan under international mediation.
The talks come at a crucial time as concerns are mounting among Palestinian factions that Israel could renege on its commitments to ending Gaza War.
Abdelatty’s comments echo the opinions of Arab and European diplomatic sources who say that Trump is “the only one capable of twisting the arm” of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
At the beginning, Netanyahu agreed to the plan, including provisions for a Palestinian state.
However, he later asserted upon returning to Israel that he “has not and will not accept” such a state.
He also noted that Egypt welcomes Hamas’ response to Trump’s plan, labeling it as “a reflection of the movement’s and other Palestinian factions’ sense of responsibility, as they take into account the fate of the Palestinian people and the protection of civilians.”
Moreover, he affirmed that the US plan “serves as a general framework to stop the war, end the bloodshed, deliver humanitarian aid, release hostages, and return remains.”
At the same time, the FM acknowledged that some aspects still require further discussion and clarification within the framework of the US proposal.
He added that these details “will be addressed through technical-level negotiations to create suitable conditions and an enabling environment for implementation.”
Upcoming Cairo Meetings
Notably, the forthcoming Cairo meetings will tackle technical and security issues to finalize the first stage of the plan, which features the exchange of prisoners from both sides and the repatriation of Israeli remains, to be followed by subsequent phases.
Israel Compliance
When asked whether Israel’s PM might ignore Trump’s call call for an immediate ceasefire —especially after reports of over 30 Palestinian deaths on the first day following the US appeal — Abdelatty responded: “We place our trust in President Trump’s leadership and determination to enforce his pivotal plan to end this war and bring peace. He is the only one capable of making Israel comply.”
International Stabilization Force
When asked about the proposed “international stabilization force,” Abdelatty affirmed that Egypt does not oppose the concept but stressed that its deployment must be based on strict conditions: its mandate should be precisely defined, its establishment must come through a UN Security Council resolution, and its responsibilities must be explicitly outlined.
The force should “support the Palestinian police, who are responsible for maintaining security and enforcing the law inside Gaza, as in the West Bank. It should also strengthen national unity between the two regions, since Gaza and the West Bank together form the foundation of the future Palestinian state. Egypt cannot accept their separation,” he added.
Hamas Disarmament
Addressing questions about the issue of Hamas’ weapons, Abdelatty noted that the matter is “a purely Palestinian issue to be addressed internally.”
He also indicated that Hamas has accepted Trump’s plan, adding that questions regarding its armaments will be tackled within the Palestinian framework.
