US President Donald Trump demanded on Wednesday an investigation into what he labeled “triple sabotage” during his United Nations appearance. The president complained that an escalator malfunction, a dead teleprompter, and a sound outage represented deliberate sabotage that endangered his safety.
The Incidents Unfold
On Tuesday, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were at the UN headquarters in New York. As they stepped onto an escalator, it suddenly stopped with a lurch, forcing them to walk up the remaining steps. This was just the beginning of a series of technical issues.
During his speech, Trump noticed that his teleprompter was not working. He spent much of his address criticizing the UN for various issues, including funding illegal migration and failing to support his peace efforts in Gaza and Ukraine.
Trump’s Reaction
A day later, Trump took to his Truth Social platform to express his frustration. In a long, angry post, he described the incidents as “very sinister” and called for an immediate investigation. He even suggested that people should be arrested for what he believes was deliberate sabotage.
“This wasn’t a coincidence, this was triple sabotage at the UN. They ought to be ashamed of themselves,” Trump wrote. He also mentioned that he was sending a letter to the Secretary-General demanding an investigation.
Trump emphasized that the escalator stop could have been a “real disaster.” He noted that it was fortunate that he and Melania did not fall forward onto the sharp edges of the steps.
The United Nations has stated that the incidents were accidental. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric explained that a videographer from the US delegation might have inadvertently triggered the safety function on the escalator. Regarding the teleprompter issue, Dujarric stated that the UN had no comment since the teleprompter is operated by the White House.
US Ambassador’s Statement
Mike Waltz, the newly installed US ambassador to the UN, formalized the demand for a thorough investigation. He called for the complete results of the UN’s probe into the escalator incident and a detailed explanation of the teleprompter failure. Waltz also demanded immediate plans to implement robust preventive measures.
“The United States will not tolerate threats to our security or dignity at international forums. We expect swift cooperation and decisive action,” Waltz stated on X.
A Secret Service official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that the agency was looking into the UN’s statement to corroborate it. The UN official, also speaking anonymously, referred to Dujarric’s earlier statement. He explained that the sound system was designed to allow people to hear speeches translated into six different languages through earpieces.
As the story develops, the world watches to see how the UN will respond to these serious allegations and what steps will be taken to ensure the safety and dignity of all delegates at future events.
