EU Faces Deep Divisions on Israel Sanctions Amid Gaza Crisis

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas expressed little hope regarding the bloc’s ability to sanction Israel over the ongoing war in Gaza. During a press conference on Saturday, Kallas highlighted the divisions among member states as a significant barrier to taking decisive action.

Foreign ministers gathered in Denmark to discuss a proposal aimed at suspending EU funding for Israeli start-ups that would serve as an initial response to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. However, the EU has struggled to achieve the necessary majority to implement this step.

Kallas stated, “I’m not very optimistic, and today we are definitely not going to adopt decisions.” Her remarks underscored the ongoing divisions within the bloc.

Internal Divisions Hamper Action

The European Union’s 27 member states remain divided between those supporting Israel and those advocating for Palestinian rights. This split has often left the EU unable to respond effectively to the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza. Several EU countries are pushing for more substantial measures against Israel but have faced frustration in their efforts.

Denmark’s foreign minister, Lars Lokke Rasmussen, emphasized the need for the EU to “change words into action.” He advocated for suspending trade cooperation with Israel, sanctioning far-right Israeli ministers, and banning imports from illegal settlements. These proposals reflect a growing urgency among some EU nations to address the situation in Gaza.

Escalating Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

Israel faces mounting pressure both domestically and internationally to halt its military offensive in Gaza with the conflict displacing a significant portion of the population, and the United Nations has declared a famine in the region.

The war began following Hamas’s attack on Israel in October 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,219 people, primarily civilians, according to an AFP tally based on Israeli figures. In response, Israel’s military actions have led to the deaths of at least 63,025 Palestinians, most of whom are civilians, according to reliable figures from the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza.

As the situation continues to evolve, the EU’s ability to unite and take meaningful action remains uncertain.
