Saudi Arabia’s Musical Heritage Takes Center Stage at Inaugural Tar Festival

Riyadh welcomed the first edition of the Tar Festival yesterday, an event organized by the Music Commission and set to run until August 23 at the Abu Bakr Salem Stage in Boulevard City. Coinciding with the Esports World Cup, the festival offers visitors an immersive cultural and musical experience dedicated to the tar—a percussion instrument deeply rooted in Saudi Arabia’s musical heritage.
The opening night drew an impressive crowd, with audiences responding enthusiastically to the performances. Beyond the concerts, attendees can explore a marketplace inspired by the historic Souq Al-Hilla, where traditional instruments are showcased and available for purchase. Moreover, live workshops also bring artisans to the forefront, demonstrating the craftsmanship behind the tar and other heritage instruments.
More than just a celebration of music, the Tar Festival underscores Saudi Arabia’s efforts to preserve and promote its cultural identity. By running alongside the internationally recognized Esports World Cup, the festival not only engages local audiences but also elevates Saudi music on the global stage.
