Saudi Arabia faces environmental challenges linked to rapid industrialization and population growth, mirroring issues seen worldwide. The Kingdom actively addresses climate change, focusing on protecting ecosystems and reducing carbon emissions as part of its national strategy.
Aligning with Global Climate Goals
Saudi Arabia is committed to the Paris Agreement and remains determined to mitigate climate change effects despite its arid climate and vast desert terrains. In 2021, the Kingdom launched the Saudi Green Initiative (SGI) with ambitious goals to cut emissions, plant 10 billion trees, and protect 30 percent of its terrestrial and marine areas.
Backed by a $188 billion investment, SGI has transitioned from vision to action with over 80 ongoing initiatives. These projects focus on afforestation, biodiversity, and emission reduction as pillars of a greener future.
Pioneering Renewable Energy and Hydrogen
Saudi Arabia is advancing its clean energy goals, aiming to lead in hydrogen production and reduce CO2 emissions by 27 million tonnes annually. By producing 4 million tonnes of clean hydrogen, the Kingdom solidifies its position as a leader in sustainable energy.
In 2023, the Kingdom connected 1.3 gigawatts of renewable energy to the grid, increasing total renewable capacity to 4.1 GW. Gas-fired power plants, now contributing 50 percent of electricity, are pivotal to achieving sustainability goals by 2030.
The SGI has restored 111,000 hectares of land, equivalent to 172,000 football fields, and planted over 95 million trees. These efforts symbolize Saudi Arabia’s progress toward creating a sustainable economy and addressing global environmental challenges.
