Saudi Arabia’s National Shipping Company (Bahri) confirmed that its oil tanker, Amjad, is safe despite a recent attack by Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthis in the Red Sea. The vessel was near the location of the attack but was not targeted, the company stated on Tuesday.
Details of the Incident
The attacks, carried out by the Houthis on September 2, targeted two crude oil tankers: the Panama-flagged Blue Lagoon I and another vessel nearby. The US Central Command reported that the Houthis used two ballistic missiles and an unmanned aerial system to strike both tankers, laden with crude oil. However, Bahri affirmed that Amjad was not affected and is proceeding to its planned destination without interruption.
Ongoing Threats
The incident underscores the escalating threat to international shipping in the Red Sea. The Houthis, in recent months, have intensified their attacks, claiming they aim to disrupt Israel’s actions in Gaza. The Houthis have attacked over 80 vessels since October, with varying degrees of success. The US military has responded by targeting Houthi missile systems, destroying two in the past 24 hours.
Environmental Concerns
The attacks also raise concerns about potential environmental disasters. The Greek-flagged Delta Sounion, attacked on August 21, remains on fire, carrying about one million barrels of crude oil. The ongoing blaze threatens severe ecological damage, with international efforts underway to salvage the vessel and prevent a spill.
Bahri’s Vigilant Response
Bahri has assured that it informed all relevant authorities immediately and remains in constant communication with its crew. The company continues to closely monitor the situation to ensure the safety of its personnel and vessels operating in the region. Despite the escalating conflict, Amjad remains fully operational and on course to its intended destination.
Danger in the Red Sea
The rising Houthi attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea are a growing concern for global commerce and environmental safety. While Bahri’s Amjad was fortunate to escape unscathed, the ongoing threat highlights the need for continued vigilance and international cooperation to protect maritime operations in the region.
