Saudi Arabia World Cup Dream Ends After Goalless Draw Against Cape Verde

Saudi Arabia’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended in disappointment on Saturday as a goalless draw against debutants Cape Verde at NRG Stadium in Houston confirmed the Green Falcons’ Group H elimination.

Cape Verde, meanwhile, secured their place in the Round of 32 in their maiden World Cup appearance, completing three consecutive draws across the group stage.

The Green Falcons arrived at this fixture needing a win, having collected just one point from their opening two matches, with a 1-1 draw against Uruguay and a heavy 4-0 defeat to Spain, representing Saudi Arabi’s heaviest World Cup defeat since a 5–0 loss against hosts Russia in 2018.

Saudi Arabia’s attack, however, never produced the cutting edge the situation demanded. Salem Al-Dawsari found space at the far post from a dangerous Abdulhamid cross, but Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha denied him with a crucial block.

Furthermore, the Green Falcons’ inability to break through a compact Blue Sharks defensive shape proved costly throughout.

Cape Verde Hold Firm Against Saudi Pressure

Cape Verde’s wide outlets Mendes and Semedo stretched the Green Falcons’ defence effectively, with Semedo’s runs down the flank forcing Al-Amri into a deflection that earned a corner.

Vozinha, at 40 years old, remained composed in the Saudi spells of pressure, catching cleanly from a Mohamed Kano header in added time after Al-Amri had fired a shot into the area.

Saudi Arabia’s head coach Georgios Donis, who took the helm ahead of the competition following the sack of Herve Renard, had spoken before the tournament of his ambition to compete for an advanced position, insisting his squad carried a good balance of experience and youth. Ultimately, however, the Green Falcons’ attacking creativity, which had yielded only one goal across the entire group stage, fell well short of what a must-win occasion required.

Cape Verde Make History

Cape Verde qualified for their first ever World Cup on 13 October 2025 with a 3–0 victory over Eswatini. They then proceeded to stun the football world across three group games. Cape Verde coach Pedro Leitão Brito said after their 2–2 draw with Uruguay: “This is something we owe to other smaller national teams, teams that struggled to qualify for a world tournament.”

The Blue Sharks now advance to face the runners-up of Group J, Argentina, in the Round of 32, while Saudi Arabia depart the United States with difficult questions to answer about the direction of their national team program.
