Iraq Scraps $764 Million Baghdad Airport Project Amid Corruption Suspicions
Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has ordered the cancellation of the Baghdad International Airport development project following allegations of corruption, according to Reuters.
The project included a $764 million contract granted last year to a consortium made up of Luxembourg-based Corporacion America Airports (CAAP) and Iraqi real estate firm Amwaj International. It aimed primarily to modernize, upgrade and expand Baghdad International Airport.
Iraqi officials had flagged possible irregularities in both the tendering process and contract terms, two government sources told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the issue.
The decision is part of a broader anti-corruption campaign that has intensified scrutiny of government institutions.
Introduced as a flagship infrastructure initiative, the project was intended to expand capacity and upgrade facilities at Baghdad International Airport after decades of underinvestment.
