North Korea Rejects US Pressure as Kim Demands Boost in Nuclear Warheads

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has vowed an “exponential” increase in his country’s nuclear capabilities, following a visit to a newly inaugurated nuclear materials production facility. Pyongyang’s state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported the inspection on Wednesday, describing Kim’s “ambitious future plan designed to beef up our state’s nuclear forces at an exponential rate.”

Kim also declared that “weapons-grade nuclear materials production capacity more than doubled during the past 5-year course.” However, North Korea did not disclose the facility’s location. Analysts believe the site is likely the newly completed uranium enrichment plant at Yongbyon, one of three suspected enrichment sites, alongside Kangson and Kusong.

Denuclearisation Off the Table

Additionally, North Korea continues to reject US pressure to abandon its arsenal, describing its nuclear path as “irreversible.” Yang Moo-jin, former president of the University of North Korean Studies, noted that with Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile currently central to US-Iran nuclear negotiations, Pyongyang appears to be “deliberately showcasing” its expanding capabilities, signalling to Washington that denuclearisation remains non-negotiable.

Meanwhile, Hong Min, an analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, pointed to a practical driver behind Wednesday’s inspection; North Korea has already fielded a large number of tactical nuclear weapons, creating a “growing need to produce more nuclear warheads” for deployment on tactical missiles.

North Korea has conducted eight missile tests this year. Analysts say the pace reflects Pyongyang’s efforts to exploit eroding international norms and cement its nuclear status. Pyongyang withdrew from the Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1993 and has since conducted six nuclear tests, facing multiple UN resolutions as a result.
