UK, France Lead 40-Nation Summit to Secure Strait of Hormuz

The United Kingdom and France will co-host a multinational meeting on Tuesday to stabilize the Strait of Hormuz, with over 40 nations planning to join this virtual gathering of defense ministers. UK Defence Secretary John Healey and French Minister Catherine Vautrin will co-chair the session. Consequently, London describes this as the first ministerial-level meeting for the proposed multinational security mission.

The talks occur as maritime traffic remains restricted through the vital waterway. Normally, this narrow passage carries one-fifth of global oil supplies. However, tensions between Iran, the United States, and Israel have disrupted shipping since February.

Healey emphasized that partners want to restore confidence in global trade routes. “We are turning diplomatic agreement into practical military plans to restore confidence for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz,” he stated. Similarly, France has deployed the aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle, while the UK sent the destroyer HMS Dragon to the region.

Diplomatic Balancing Act

Both London and Paris seek regional stability rather than confrontation with Tehran, as French President Emmanuel Macron clarified that Paris “never envisaged” a naval deployment directly into the strait. Instead, he described the initiative as a mission “coordinated with Iran.” Macron also rejected the idea of imposing tolls on vessels crossing the waterway.

Meanwhile, Iran maintains a firm stance on its territorial waters. Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi warned that foreign warships would face a “decisive and immediate response.” He insisted that “only the Islamic Republic of Iran can establish security in this strait.”

Despite these warnings, Tehran remains open to a settlement. Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei called Iran’s latest proposal “legitimate” and “generous.” Nevertheless, diplomatic progress remains uncertain.

President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s terms as “totally unacceptable.” Furthermore, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu insisted that Iran must dismantle its nuclear infrastructure. Fresh drone incidents in the UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar continue to threaten the fragile regional ceasefire.
