Six Killed in Israeli Attack on Southern Lebanon Despite Ceasefire

Israeli airstrikes targeting a town in southern Lebanon killed six people and injured seven others, signaling continued hostilities despite the ongoing ceasefire, according to Arab News.

Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency (NNA) reported that Israeli strikes carried out overnight on Monday that targeted a house in Kfar Dounine, a town located around 95 kilometers (59 miles) from the capital, Beirut.

The wounded were transferred to hospitals in the southern coastal city of Tyre for treatment.

Israel has ramped up its attacks in southern Lebanon amid ongoing exchanges of fire with the Iran-backed Hezbollah group, despite an existing ceasefire agreement reached on April 17 between Israel and Lebanon aimed at putting an end to the fighting.

War in Iran

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, targeting its leadership and triggering a new conflict in the Middle East.

Iran has been responding with a retaliatory counterattack in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi as a retaliatory move, while launching barrages of missiles and drones toward Israel.

The conflict has spread across the Middle East, leaving thousands dead, triggering unprecedented disruptions to energy supplies especially after the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz.

Lebanon Involvement

Lebanon was drawn into the conflict on March 2 when Hezbollah launched a series of attacks to support its ally, Tehran.

As a result, Israel has launched an extensive military campaign that has since killed more than 2,000 people.

Extended Ceasefire

Trump has recently announced a three-week extension of the ceasefire last week after hosting the Israeli and Lebanese ambassadors at the White House.

Despite the fact that the ceasefire has significantly reduced hostilities, Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah have continued to trade blows in southern Lebanon.

Israeli forces remain deployed within a self-declared “buffer zone,” maintaining an active military presence along the frontier.

Lebanese leaders recently urged the US ambassador to Beirut to intensify pressure on Israel to halt its attacks during the truce period, although Israel has also reported coming under cross-border fire.

Israel’s military reported over the weekend that one of its soldiers was killed during fighting near the Lebanese border. Therefore, the total number of Israeli military fatalities since the outbreak of the war reached 18 soldiers and one civilian contractor.
