Trump Rejects Iranian Proposal as US-Iran Tensions Escalate

US President Donald Trump Said on Friday his dissatisfaction with Tehran’s latest diplomatic overture, signaling a continued deadlock in the two-month-old conflict. While the Iranian leadership expressed a readiness for dialogue, the American president suggested that the current proposal fails to meet U.S. requirements for a lasting settlement.

“They want to make a deal, but… I’m not satisfied with it,” Trump told reporters at the White House. He characterized the Iranian leadership as “very disjointed” and claimed they are “asking for things that I can’t agree to.”

The diplomatic impasse coincides with deteriorating relations between Washington and its traditional European partners. The United States recently announced the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from Germany following public disagreements with Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The German leader previously criticized the American strategy, suggesting the US lacks a clear exit plan. In response, a senior Pentagon official labeled these comments “inappropriate and unhelpful,” defending the president’s decision to drawdown forces as a necessary reaction to counterproductive rhetoric.

Global Energy Security and the Strait of Hormuz

Central to the confrontation is the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz. This vital maritime artery carries 20% of the world’s oil and gas supplies, and its blockade has caused significant volatility in global markets. Although benchmark Brent crude eased to $109 on Friday, prices remain near four-year highs.

President Trump remains under intense pressure to restore the flow of energy. However, he emphasized that he will not accept a premature solution. “We will not end the confrontation early and then have the problem arise in three more years,” he stated during a speech in Florida.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi countered that Tehran is ready for diplomacy only if the U.S. abandons its “excessive approach” and “provocative actions.” Despite this, he confirmed that Iran’s armed forces remain on high alert.

Humanitarian and Economic Impact

The conflict has already claimed thousands of lives and severely impacted the Iranian economy. While the U.S. Treasury has warned that any shippers paying tolls to Iran face punitive sanctions, China has called for an immediate reopening of the Strait.

Ambassador Fu Cong urged both sides to maintain the ceasefire, noting that the maritime crisis will likely dominate upcoming talks between President Xi Jinping and President Trump in Beijing. Consequently, the international community remains focused on whether a “human basis” for peace, as Trump hinted, can eventually outweigh the military course of action.
