Turkey Accuses Israel of Using Security Concerns to Justify Land Acquisition

Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Saturday accused Israel of invoking security concerns as a pretext for territorial expansion, according to AFP.

Fidan noted that Israel is using security concerns to justify its push for acquiring more lands.

“Israel is not after its own security. Israel is after more land. Security is being used by the Netanyahu government as an excuse to occupy more land,” Hakan Fidan told the Antalya Diplomacy Forum.

Turkey has been a harsh critic of Israeli since the beginning of its war on Gaza in October 2023, with Turkey announcing that it would join South Africa’s genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), reported Reuters.

In 2025, Turkey decided to sever all commercial and economic ties with Israel and close its airspace to Israeli government planes over Gaza War.

This move follows reports that Turkish port authorities have started informally demanding shipping agents to submit letters confirming that vessels have no ties to Israel and are not transporting military or hazardous cargo destined for the country.

During Antalya’s forum, Fidan said that “Israel has created an illusion internationally, claiming that Israel is in favor of its own security, but it has become very clear, especially in the recent years … it is more than that.”

He also said that Israel must recognize that the only way to live peacefully in the region is to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of other countries, rather than using force against them.
