Republicans largely welcomed strikes launched on Saturday by US forces and Israel against Iran, but prominent Democrats condemned the aggression. This military action, dubbed “Operation Epic Fury,” has effectively ignited a fierce constitutional debate over war powers in the capital.
“Today, Iran is facing the severe consequences of its evil actions,” Speaker of the House Mike Johnson said in a statement. He cited Tehran’s sustained nuclear ambitions and the murder of Americans as primary justifications for the massive military intervention. Furthermore, Johnson confirmed that congressional leaders received intelligence briefings earlier this week regarding the potential for imminent and necessary combat operations.
Senator Lindsey Graham, a longtime supporter of military intervention, claimed the strikes would trigger historic change in the Middle East. “It will be violent, extensive and I believe, at the end of the day, successful,” he added on social media. Senior House Republican Tom Emmer also hailed the move as a bold and decisive act of strength by President Trump.
Democrats Warn of Endless Conflict
However, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer demanded an immediate briefing, arguing that Americans do not want another costly foreign war. “The American people do not want another endless and costly war in the Middle East when there are so many problems at home,” he said. Democrats largely remain united against the scale of the attack, which they claim lacks clear congressional authority.
Senator Ed Markey slammed the attack order as illegal and unconstitutional, while Senator Jack Reed criticized the lack of endgame. “The administration has left the American people in the dark about the true costs and risks of this conflict,” Reed stated.
Despite party loyalty, Congressman Thomas Massie broke ranks to oppose the war, calling it a violation of “America First” principles. He argued that the House and Senate must reconvene immediately to force a formal congressional vote on the conflict. Massie plans to work with Democrats to ensure that the administration respects constitutional limits regarding the power to declare war.
