The Pentagon announced on Friday that it will sever all academic ties with Harvard University, ending military education and fellowships, marking the latest escalation in the Trump administration’s ongoing battle with the prestigious Ivy League institution. Officials claim the university promotes “woke” ideologies that conflict with military values and national defense interests.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth released a pointed statement explaining the reasoning behind this drastic departmental shift. “For too long, this department has sent our best and brightest officers to Harvard, hoping the university would better understand and appreciate our warrior class,” Hegseth said. He argued that the partnership failed to produce the intended results for the American armed forces.
“Instead, too many of our officers came back looking too much like Harvard — heads full of globalist and radical ideologies that do not improve our fighting ranks,” Hegseth continued. Consequently, the Pentagon will begin the severance process during the 2026-2027 school year to ensure a smooth transition. Military personnel currently enrolled in Harvard classes will be allowed to finish their studies before the ban takes effect.
Broader Ivy League Review Underway
Hegseth further clarified his stance in a post on X, using his preferred historical name for the Department of Defense. “Harvard is woke; The War Department is not,” he wrote to his followers. Furthermore, the Secretary announced that the Pentagon will review its ties with all Ivy League colleges regarding military training.
“The goal is to determine whether or not they actually deliver cost-effective strategic education for future senior leaders when compared to, say, public universities and our military graduate programs,” he said. Interestingly, Hegseth himself graduated from both Princeton and Harvard, though he reportedly returned his degree to the latter. The former Fox News host frequently criticized the university on air for its allegedly left-leaning policies.
Financial and Legal Pressures Mount
This educational cut follows President Donald Trump’s Monday announcement regarding a massive $1 billion damage claim against the school. This demand surfaced after a New York Times report suggested the college won concessions during ongoing settlement negotiations. Additionally, administration officials have accused Harvard of failing to protect Jewish students during recent pro-Palestinian protests on campus.
While the administration files legal complaints and demands payouts, academics have raised concerns about the erosion of academic freedom. Harvard’s former president expressed worry that government pressure could fundamentally damage the independence of American higher education. Previously, Trump sought to cut $2.6 billion in funding and moved to block international students from entering the country.
