41 people die due to a massive fire in a church in Egypt

A huge fire broke out in a service building belonging to the Abu Sefein Church in Imbaba Cairo, on Sunday morning killing and injuring several people, including children who were transferred to Imbaba General and Agouza Hospitals.

The Ministry of Health and Population announced the death of 41 people and the injury of 12 as a result of the fire that occurred this morning, Sunday, in the Abu Seifin Church in the Imbaba area, in Giza Governorate.

Dr. Hossam Abdel Ghaffar, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Health and Population, stated that the total number of deaths in the tragic accident amounted to 41, due to the thick smoke resulting from the fire and the stampede due to the victims’ attempts to escape.

He indicated that 2 of the injured left the hospitals after receiving the necessary medical care, while 12 injured are currently receiving medical care, including 5 in Agouza Hospital, and 7 in Imbaba General Hospital, noting that 4 of the injured are in an unstable condition.

A statement from the Ministry of Health said today, that Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Health and Population, is continuing to provide ambulance and medical services to the victims of the fire accident that occurred this morning, Sunday, in the Abu Sefin Church in Imbaba area, in Giza Governorate.

He also directed to follow the repercussions of the tragic accident.

The official spokesman for the Ministry of Health confirmed that the ambulances that were dispatched to the scene of the accident amounted to 37 cars, and 55 cases were transferred to the hospitals (Imbaba General and Agouza).

Abdel Ghaffar pointed to raising the state of readiness in the hospitals in the Giza and Cairo governorates, pointing out that all blood types and emergency medicines were available in all hospitals that received the injured.

Abdul Ghaffar noted that the ambulance was informed of the fire at 8:57 minutes, and immediately the first ambulance moved from the nearest station in the Imbaba airport area and arrived at the site of the accident at 8:59 minutes, then the rest of the cars continued to arrive.

The Ministry of Interior announced that the fire resulted in the injury of two officers and 3 members of the civil protection forces, noting that the fire broke out as a result of an electrical fault.

The authorities pushed several ambulances to transport the dead and injured, and they pushed dozens of fire engines to try to control and put out the fire.

President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi offered his sincere condolences to the families of the innocent victims.

In a post on his official Facebook page, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said: “I am closely following the developments of the tragic accident at Al-Munira Church in Giza Governorate, and I have directed all relevant state agencies and institutions to take all necessary measures, and immediately to deal with this incident and its effects and to provide all I provide health care to the injured”.
