The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Tuesday that a deportation flight carrying immigrants from various countries has landed in Eswatini, Southern Africa. This action follows the US Supreme Court’s recent decision to lift restrictions on deporting migrants to third countries.
In late June, the US Supreme Court cleared the way for President Donald Trump’s administration to resume deportations to countries other than migrants’ home nations. This ruling allows the government to act without providing migrants a chance to demonstrate the potential harms they might face. Consequently, the decision represents a significant victory for the administration’s aggressive mass deportation strategy.
Details of the Deportation Flight
“A safe third-country deportation flight to Eswatini has landed,” stated US Department of Homeland Security spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin. She emphasized that the individuals on this flight were so uniquely dangerous that their home countries refused to accept them. In a post on social media platform X, McLaughlin identified five deportees from Vietnam, Jamaica, Laos, Cuba, and Yemen. These individuals had been convicted of serious crimes, including child rape and murder.
Earlier this month, a senior Trump administration official revealed in a memo that US immigration officials could deport migrants to third countries with as little as six hours’ notice. US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) typically waits at least 24 hours after notifying individuals of their removal to a third country. However, the memo, dated July 9, indicates that ICE could expedite this process in “exigent circumstances.” In such cases, migrants would still have the opportunity to consult with an attorney.
Concerns Over Human Rights
The memo also stated that migrants could be sent to countries that have committed to not persecuting or torturing them, without requiring additional procedures. This new ICE policy suggests that the Trump administration may quickly relocate migrants to various countries worldwide. However, human rights advocates have raised significant concerns regarding due process and other issues related to Trump’s immigration policies. The administration has framed these measures as essential for enhancing domestic security.
