Turkish Military Plane Crashes in Georgia, 20 Feared Dead

A Turkish military cargo plane crashed on Tuesday near the Georgian border with Azerbaijan, the Associated Press (AP) reported citing Turkish authorities.

A Turkish C-130 cargo plane, carrying 20 personnel on board including the flight crew, had taken off from Azerbaijan and was heading back to Türkiye when it crashed, according to the Turkish Defense Ministry.

It added that rescue and search operations were underway in coordination with Azerbaijani and Georgian authorities, without providing immediate confirmation of casualties or details about the crash’s cause.

The Georgian Interior Ministry said that the plane crashed in the Sighnaghi municipality, near the Azerbaijani border, noting that it has launched an investigation.

Moreover, Georgia’s air traffic management authority said the plane disappeared from its radar several minutes after crossing into Georgian territory without issuing a distress call.

Meanwhile, the Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, offered condolences for the victims. “God willing, we will overcome this crash with minimum hardships. May God rest the soul of our martyrs, and let us be with them through our prayers,” he said.

Similarly, Azerbaijan’s President, Ilham Aliyev, and Georgian Foreign Minister, Maka Botchorishvili, extended their condolences to their Turkish counterparts over the crash.

In a phone call with Erdogan, Aliyev “extended profound condolences to the President of Türkiye, the families and loved ones of the perished servicemen, and the fraternal people of Türkiye over the crash of a military cargo plane belonging to the Turkish Air Force in Georgian territory,” the office of Azerbaijan’s President said.
