US President Donald Trump has joined a growing chorus of critics attacking the decision to grant Hollywood star George Clooney French citizenship, following a junior government official’s claim that the move represents a “double standard” in immigration policy.
An official decree recently revealed that Clooney, his wife Amal, and their two children are now officially citizens of France. Trump, a frequent critic of the “Ocean’s Eleven” actor, quickly took to Truth Social to voice his sharp disapproval. “Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France,” Trump posted. He further alleged that the country suffers from a major crime problem due to its “absolutely horrendous handling of immigration.”
‘Double Standard’
The controversy centers on the timing of the grant, as France plans to toughen language requirements for all other applicants starting 1 January. Furthermore, Clooney has admitted his French remains poor despite hundreds of lessons. Marie-Pierre Vedrenne, a junior interior minister, expressed concern during a France Info radio interview. “Personally, I understand the feeling of some French people of a double standard,” she stated. Consequently, she warned that the government must remain careful about the message it sends to the public.
However, Interior Minister Laurent Nunez and the foreign ministry staunchly defended the naturalization, stating that the French civil code allows nationality for foreigners who contribute to the nation’s “influence and prosperity.” Officials highlighted that the Clooneys maintain a home in Provence and contribute significantly to France’s cultural prestige. Moreover, they emphasized that Amal Clooney, a human rights lawyer, frequently collaborates with international organizations based in France.
“The passport allocation meets the conditions set by law,” the foreign ministry added. The ministry noted the family underwent a “rigorous procedure” including security investigations and regulatory interviews.
Growing Interest in French Citizenship
The Clooneys are not alone in their desire for French citizenship, as Hollywood director Jim Jarmusch recently announced that he is also applying, citing a desire for “a place to where I can escape the United States.” According to interior ministry figures, around 48,800 people acquired French nationality by decree in 2024.
Looking ahead, France continues to attract international figures who appreciate its culture, language, and lifestyle. Despite the controversy surrounding the Clooneys’ citizenship, the French government remains steadfast in its decision, citing the family’s contributions and adherence to the law.
