An unidentified attacker opened fire on a United States patrol in the central Syrian town of Palmyra on Saturday, wounding up to four American service members, according to Reuters.
The attack also injured two Syrian service personnel, a security source reported.
Syrian state news agency SANA added that the attacker was killed, without disclosing further details.
A US official, speaking anonymously, clarified that the number of injured personnel and the extent of their injuries could change as additional details came in.
The US is deploying hundreds of troops in eastern Syria as part of a coalition fighting the Islamic State group.
Earlier reports from two local Syrian officials told Reuters that a convoy carrying Syrian military units alongside US forces from the American-led coalition had come under gunfire.
The source told SANA that US helicopters carried the injured to a US base in Syria’s Al-Tanf region near the Iraqi border.
Syrian American Relations
In November, Syrian President Ahmed Al-Sharaa held a landmark meeting with US President Donald Trump at the White House, marking an unprecedented diplomatic move in Syria’s history.
Al-Sharaa, who toppled Bashar Al-Assad’s regime in December and ended a brutal chapter of Syria’s history, has become the first Syrian leader to visit the US since the country’s independence in 1946.
The meeting represented a turning point and political breakthrough for Damascus as the US President has waived sanctions on Syria, marking the latest move to further support Syria’s new government.
In a recent call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Trump said he was “very satisfied” with Syria’s performance under President Al-Sharaa.
Moreover, he noted that the US was “doing everything within our power to make sure the Government of Syria continues to do what was intended” to rebuild Syria that was torn apart due to the civil war.
