Syrian FM Raises Flag Over Embassy in Washington, Urges for Lifting All Sanctions
Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shibani raised the Syrian flag over the embassy in Washington on Friday, voicing Damascus’s aspiration that all sanctions on Syria including the “Caesar Act” will be lifted, according to Al-Arabiya.
The remarkable move followed Al-Shibani’s meeting with a number of officials at the US Treasury Department in Washington on Thursday.
This meeting was part of the Syrian foreign minister’s official visit to Washington for high-level discussions.
The talks concentrated on how to reintegrate Syria’s economy into the global financial system in a safe and responsible manner, while stressing the need to intensify joint efforts to curb terrorism financing.
During the visit, Al-Shibani also met with several members of Congress to strengthen bilateral relations and discuss the lifting of US sanctions imposed on Syria.
The Trump administration has already granted temporary waivers to parts of the sanctions. However, a complete repeal would require Congress approval.
Diplomatic Breakthrough
Since the fall of Bashar Al-Assad’s regime in December 2024, the new government has gained regional and international support.
In April, Al-Shaibani addressed the United Nations for the first time and raised the new Syrian flag at the body’s New York headquarters.
Moreover, Syria’s Interim President, Ahmed Al-Sharaa, met US President Donald Trump in Saudi Arabia in May- a crucial step that eased sanctions on Syria. In the same month, he traveled to Paris and met French President Emmanuel Macron on his first trip to the West.
Macron emphasized France’s support for the construction of a new Syria as “a free, stable, sovereign Syria that respects all components of Syrian society,” according to a statement by the French Presidency.
This month, Al-Sharaa will speak at the United Nations General Assembly, marking the first Syrian leader to do so in decades, according to AFP.
