Syria Welcomes Re-activation of Frozen OIC Membership After 13 Years

In a remarkable milestone, Syria welcomed the re-activation of its membership in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on March 8, after being frozen for almost 13 years, according to Arab News.

According to the OIC statement, the decision represents a significant step toward Syria’s return to the regional and international communities as a free and just state.

The reactivation decision was part of an extraordinary meeting of the 57-member group at the organization’s headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on Friday.

In his opening statement, OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha stated that the initiative to include an item on Syria on the agenda of the session comes at an appropriate time.

In February, Syria’s new President Ahmed Al-Sharaa received an invitation from Egyptian Counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to take part in an Arab League summit in Cairo. Al-Sharaa’s participation marked a major step in re-establishing ties with the Arab world after al-Assad’s downfall.
