Syria Intercepts Iraqi Drone Attack on Former US Base

The Syrian army announced on Saturday that it had intercepted and repelled a drone attack launched from neighboring Iraq, targeting a military site in southern Syria, according to AFP.

This site had previously hosted US forces.

Syria’s official news agency, SANA, quoted the army as saying that its forces successfully “repelled a drone attack on the al-Tanf military base in southern Syria.”

“The drones were launched from Iraqi territory,” it added.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran, targeting its leadership and triggering a new conflict in the Middle East.

Iran has been responding with a retaliatory counterattack in Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi as a retaliatory move, while launching barrages of missiles and drones toward Israel.

The war has since drawn in Iraq with pro-Tehran Iraqi factions claiming responsibility for a series of attacks on US assets inside Iraq and across the region.

However, those groups themselves have also come under retaliatory strikes.

The Syrian military reported earlier this week that a missile attack from Iraq had targeted one of the Syrian bases in the northeast.

Nevertheless, an Iraqi official attributed the incident to a local armed group.

Recently, the US forces have withdrawn from several military positions in Syria, including the Al-Tanf base in the southeast, as well as Shadadi and the Qasrak facility in the northeastern Hasakah province.
