Saudi FM Joins Quad Meeting on Sudan

The Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, took part on Wednesday in a quadrilateral meeting on Sudan, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

In addition to the Saudi Foreign Minister, the meeting involved representatives of the US, Egypt and the UAE – collectively known as the “Quad.”

The Quad meeting discussed the latest developments in Sudan crisis. It stressed the urgent need for unifying efforts to address humanitarian challenges, according to the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

It also emphasized the importance of implementing the commitments outlined in the Jeddah Declaration to protect Sudanese civilians, and ensuring Sudan’s stability while preserving its sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

Earlier this month, the Quad proposed a roadmap for peace in Sudan to end the war that has been raging for over two years. In a joint statement, the group proposed a three-month humanitarian truce, which will be followed by a permanent ceasefire.

After that, a 9-month transition process should begin “to meet the aspirations of the Sudanese people towards smoothly establishing an independent, civilian-led government with broad-based legitimacy and accountability.”

It also reaffirmed that “there is no viable military solution to the conflict, and the status quo creates unacceptable suffering and risks to peace and security.”

Moreover, it urged all parties to the conflict to facilitate rapid and unhindered humanitarian access across Sudan and protect civilians.

The war in Sudan erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), triggering “the world’s most devastating humanitarian and displacement crisis,” according to the UN.

It has also split the country in two, with SAF controlling the center, north and east, while the RSF holds almost all of the western Darfur region and parts of Kordofan.
