Saudi Arabian Official Participates in UK’s AI Safety Summit

Dr. Abdullah bin Sharf Al-Ghamdi, the head of the Saudi Data and Artificial Intelligence Authority (SDAIA) is participating in the AI Safety Summit .

The summit held in Bletchley Park, northwest of London, from November 1-2, 2023., organized by the UK, aims to foster a shared understanding of the risks posed by cutting-edge AI technologies and the need for action concerning them.

Participation, Discussions

Dr. Al-Ghamdi discussed several focal points highlighting the significance of Artificial Intelligence as a modern advanced technology that has significantly impacted contemporary life at the individual, institutional, and governmental levels.

 First Day

On the first day of the summit, through two dialogue sessions, he discussed the risks arising from the unforeseen advancement in AI’s leading capabilities and its implications for future development, including open-source aspects.

The second session titled “What Should the Scientific Community Do Regarding the Risks and Opportunities of AI?” involves multidisciplinary discussions on the current status of technical solutions for AI safety, required research areas, and promising solutions.

Day Two Agenda

On the second day, Dr. Al-Ghamdi will review the active role of data and AI in our daily uses, along with their roles in the healthcare sector and solutions they offer to address the challenges of climate change.

Two sessions are held, the first focuses on building a shared understanding of AI risks and potential future cooperation, and the second on exploring global opportunities of AI in the fields of climate and healthcare. Additionally, discussions on exchanging global opportunities for AI will also be held.

Networking, Future Collaborations

It is scheduled for Dr. Al-Ghamdi to meet with Michelle Donelan, the British Minister of State for Science, Innovation and Technology, and several executives of major companies specialized in AI technologies on the sidelines of the summit.

They will discuss ways to enhance cooperation with them.

Summit Objectives

The AI Safety Summit aims to develop a shared understanding of the risks posed by frontier AI technologies and the necessity of taking actions regarding them, as well as reviewing potential areas of cooperation in AI safety research.
