Saudi Arabia welcomes UN Security Council designation of Houthis as a terrorist group

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs applauded the UN Security Council’s classification of the Houthi militia as a terrorist organization, as well as the expansion of the arms embargo on Yemen to include all members of the terrorist group.

The ministry expressed the hope that this decision would help put an end to the terrorist Houthi militia’s and their supporters’ activities by neutralizing their threat and cutting off their supply of missiles, drones, high-quality weapons, and Iranian funds to fund their war effort and target civilians and economic facilities in the Kingdom and the UAE.

The Ministry also reaffirmed its support for efforts to find a comprehensive political solution to the Yemeni crisis, including the efforts of the UN Special Envoy for Yemen, which are based on the Gulf initiative and its implementation mechanisms, the outcomes of the comprehensive national dialogue, and relevant Security Council resolutions, including Resolution 2216.

This comes after the UN Security Council passed a resolution on Monday expanding the embargo on the delivery of arms to Yemen to all Houthi militia members after it had previously been limited to specific individuals and corporations.

Norway, Mexico, Brazil, and Ireland were among the eleven countries that voted in favor of the resolution, with four abstentions: Norway, Mexico, Brazil, and Ireland.

It’s worth noting that a committee of UN specialists stated at the end of January that the Houthis continue to breach the international organization’s arms embargo.

The committee also stated in a 300-page report given to the UN Security Council that Iranian-backed militia members are continuously recruiting minors to fight in the seven-year-old conflict.

Experts explained that the Houthis use a complex network of international intermediaries to obtain essential components for their weapons systems.
