The Arab Group at the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) will host the “Arab Week at UNESCO” from November 4-5. This marks the first event of its kind in more than 50 years, initiated by Saudi Arabia through the Saudi National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science.
Saudi Leadership in Arab Cultural Cooperation
Saudi Arabia, under the guidance of Minister of Culture Prince Badr bin Farhan, spearheaded this initiative. His directive emphasizes enhancing coordination with other countries to foster joint development projects. The event will be held at UNESCO’s headquarters in Paris, focusing on strengthening Arab cultural connections.
Diverse Cultural Exhibitions
The Arab Week will feature a variety of cultural and artistic exhibitions. These include:
- A market showcasing Arab cultural products.
- An exhibition on Arabic calligraphy.
- A photography exhibition of UNESCO-registered Arab heritage sites.
- A pavilion for Arab music and cooking.
- A display of Arab handicrafts and fashion.
Symposia and Artistic Displays
In addition to the exhibitions, the event will host several symposia. Topics will cover the Arabic novel, artificial intelligence, Arabic calligraphy, and children’s literature. There will also be an Arabic calligraphy competition, sand drawing displays, and works by Arab artists and designers.
Promoting Arab Culture Globally
The “Arab Week at UNESCO” highlights Saudi Arabia’s efforts to enhance cultural dialogue between Arab nations and the rest of the world. The initiative has gained widespread support from Arab countries. It was officially endorsed at the May 2024 ALECSO meeting in Jeddah.
This event aims to bolster the presence of Arab culture within UNESCO. It also seeks to foster new partnerships between Arab nations, UNESCO, and other member states. Additionally, the initiative aspires to engage youth with Arab culture and ensure the long-term success of the UNESCO Arab Week.
