Saudi Arabia Pioneers World with New Medical Breakthrough through ‘Casgevy’ Gene Therapy

Saudi Arabia has achieved a revolutionary medical breakthrough as King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh (KAMC-RD) has succeeded in using Casgevy gene therapy to treat thalassemia major, reported the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).

Through CRISPR gene editing technology, the medical teams at KAMC-RD have treated a 13-year-old patient suffering from Mediterranean anemia. This remarkable success represents the first of its kind outside the scope of clinical trials and research.

The patient who had been relying on periodic blood transfusions every 3 weeks since his birth, left the medical city after the successful transplantation of genetic cells and having complete recovery.
