Saudi Arabia Participates in U20 Mayors Summit

A Saudi delegation, led by Fahd bin Abdulmohsen Al-Rasheed—Advisor to the General Secretariat of the Cabinet and Head of the Saudi Delegation to the Urban 20 (U20)—took part in the eighth U20 Mayors Summit held in Johannesburg.

Saudi Arabia’s participation highlighted the Kingdom’s distinctive approach and expertise in urban development while promoting the advancement of urban leadership education on a global stage.

U20 Mayors Summit

The U20 is a diplomatic platform that unites G20 cities and other global partners to address critical issues related to urbanization, the economy, climate change, and sustainable development.

On the sidelines of the summit, Al-Rasheed co-hosted a mayoral event with Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero and Tshwane Executive Mayor Prof. Nasiphi Moya, this year’s U20 co-chairs. Additionally, he urged U20 mayors to support the creation of a Master of City Administration degree designed to equip future urban leaders with essential skills.

Moreover, the event brought together leaders from major global cities, prominent urban scholars, and representatives of international organizations.

In his opening remarks, Al-Rasheed emphasized, “City leadership is uniquely complex, requiring a blend of executive, political, and technical expertise. Yet today, few educational programs prepare aspiring leaders with such a comprehensive skill set.”

He added, “In the corporate world, the MBA has become a universal benchmark for executive education. It is time for city leaders and aspiring leaders to have an equivalent professional standard.”

The Mayoral Leadership Event, first launched in Rio de Janeiro during the 2024 U20 Global Summit, continues Saudi Arabia’s efforts to strengthen urban diplomacy and foster a lasting legacy of leadership within the world’s leading forum on urban affairs.
