Saudi Arabia Launches Astronaut Program That Will Send First Saudi Woman to Space in 2023

The Saudi Space Authority launched, on Thursday, the Kingdom’s program for astronauts, which aims to qualify experienced Saudi cadres to undertake long and short-term space flights, announcing the launch of its first flights in 2023, and it will include the first Saudi female pilot and astronaut crew.

In a statement, the authority indicated that the goal of the program is to participate in scientific experiments, international research, and future space-related missions, to benefit from the promising opportunities offered by the space sector and its industries globally, and to contribute to research that serves humanity in several priority areas such as health, sustainability, and technology.

The authority explained that the program includes sending Saudi astronauts to space on missions to serve humanity, stressing that it will launch the first flights in 2023.

The Saudi Authority indicated that the first flight will include the first Saudi female pilot and astronaut crew, considering this an important historical event by sending the first Saudi woman into space.

Manned space flights are a measure of countries’ global superiority and competitiveness in many areas, such as technological and engineering progress, scientific research, and innovation, according to the Saudi Space Authority.

The Minister of Communications, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Saudi Space Authority, Abdullah Amer Al-Sawaha, said in a tweet on Twitter that his country “enters space from the wide door,” stressing the Kingdom’s seriousness in serving humanity from space and the beginning of this qualitative program, to sharpen the determination of current and future generations.

It is worth noting that Riyadh intends to launch the national space strategy in the coming months, which will provide a detailed presentation of all Saudi space programs and their goals that contribute to serving humanity, according to the statement.

The Saudi Space Authority was established by royal order in December 2018, to set a set of primary goals that serve national security interests, protect it from space-related risks and encourage growth and progress, according to the authority’s website.
