Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the terrorist attack on the Imam Ali bin Abi Talib Mosque in Homs, Syria on Friday, which resulted in multiple deaths and injuries.
Security forces in Homs reported that an explosive device detonated inside the mosque, which serves the Alawite minority sect residents.
Health ministry official Najib Al-Naasan confirmed that the blast wounded 18 other worshippers, though these initial casualty figures might rise. Therefore, authorities cordoned off the Wadi al-Dahab neighborhood to investigate the scene while medical teams rushed the injured to hospitals.
Extremist Group Claims Responsibility
The extremist group Saraya Ansar Al-Sunnah claimed responsibility for the Homs bombing through its official communication channels on Telegram. This organization previously admitted to a suicide bombing at a Damascus church in June, an attack that killed 20 innocent people.
Furthermore, the group continues to target religious sites in a desperate attempt to undermine the current stability within the country.
The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed full solidarity with the Syrian people during this tragic incident and supported ongoing security efforts.
In a formal statement, the ministry said: “The kingdom affirms its categorical rejection of terrorism, extremism, and targeting of mosques. It expresses its solidarity with Syria in this great tragedy, and its support for the government’s efforts to establish security.”
The kingdom extended sincere condolences to the families of the victims and the Syrian government following this heinous criminal act. Officials also wished a speedy recovery for the injured and expressed hope for continued peace throughout the Syrian Arab Republic.
Finally, Riyadh emphasized that attacking places of worship constitutes a blatant assault on all human values and religious principles.
