Saudi Arabia Appoints Dr. Faisal Al-Mejfel Ambassador to Syria

The Saudi King, King Salman bin Abdulaziz, appointed Dr. Faisal bin Saud Al-Mejfel as the Kingdom’s ambassador to Syria, about 12 years after the closure of the Kingdom’s embassy in Damascus.

The Syrian government announced the resumption of its diplomatic work in Saudi Arabia on May 9, 2023, and on October 1, 2023, the Syrian embassy in Riyadh was reopened.

Last May, Syrian Foreign Minister Faisal Al-Mekdad said after his meeting with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, “We have the decision from the highest leadership in Syria and Saudi Arabia that we will move towards progress and there will be no turning back.”

It is noteworthy that the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced last December that the Syrian ambassador appointed to Saudi Arabia presented his credentials at the ministry’s headquarters. The Saudi Foreign Ministry stated, in a post on its official account on the “X” platform, that “on behalf of the Saudi Foreign Minister, the Undersecretary for Protocol Affairs, Abdul Majeed Al-Sammari, received a copy of the credentials of the Ambassador of the Syrian Arab Republic appointed to the Kingdom, Dr. Mohamed Ayman Sousan.”

Moreover, the ministerial meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Arab States, which was held on May 7, 2023, issued a decision requiring the resumption of the participation of Syrian delegations in the meetings of the Council of the League of Arab States and participation in all its affiliated organizations and bodies.
