Samsung Announces Five-Year Investment Plan to Lead AI Growth

South Korean conglomerate Samsung announced on Sunday an ambitious $310 billion investment plan over the next five years, focused primarily on cutting-edge technologies powering artificial intelligence, according to AFP.

The move comes at a crucial time as the world witnesses a remarkable surge in demand for AI technologies.

Samsung Electronics, the company’s flagship unit, secures a special place among the world’s pioneering memory-chip manufacturers, offering essential components for the AI industry and its supporting infrastructure.

Crucially, the groundbreaking plan features a landmark project to construct a new semiconductor facility, Pyeongtaek Plant 5, designed to address the rising global demand for memory chips.

“The Pyeongtaek plant is expected to play an even greater strategic role in both the global semiconductor supply chain and South Korea’s domestic chip ecosystem,” Samsung said in a statement.

The statement also unveiled that operation of the new line will begin in 2028.

It added that Samsung SDS, the group’s IT and logistics arm, will launch two AI data centres in South Jeolla and Gumi.

Moreover, the five-year investment plan features a possibility to establish a domestic production line “for next-generation batteries, including all-solid-state batteries.”

Thanks to the surging demand for AI applications, Samsung Electronics recorded a more than 30 percent year-on-year rise in third-quarter profits.

Interestingly, the company revealed this groundbreaking plan after the South Korean government pledged to triple its spending on artificial intelligence in 2026. President Lee Jae Myung has vowed to ‘usher in the AI era,’ with a bold goal to position South Korea among the world’s top three AI powers, behind the United States and China.
