Saudi Arabia’s Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has announced plans to extend the Red Line of the Riyadh Metro, awarding a contract for an 8.4‑kilometre extension with five new stations, according to Gulf News.
New Expansion
The expanded route will span from King Saud University to the landmark Diriyah Gate development, with five stations, two elevated and three underground.
The Red Line extension—also known as Line 2—will stretch 8.4 kilometers, including 1.3 kilometers of elevated track and 7.1 kilometers running underground.
This move seeks to bring Diriyah—one of Saudi Arabia’s flagship heritage and tourism destinations—closer by rail. Therefore, the extension will further enhance connections between Riyadh’s educational, business, and cultural districts.
Interestingly, the expanded network will allow travelers to reach Diriyah from STC station in under 15 minutes. Meanwhile, journeys from the King Abdullah Financial District are expected to take less than 20 minutes.
Travel times are also set to improve, with journeys from King Fahd Sports City anticipated to take under 40 minutes and trips from Qasr Al Hokm coming in at less than 30 minutes.
Riyadh Metro
