A large-scale environmental cleanup campaign, titled “Our Sea, Our Responsibility,” was launched today in Jeddah to protect the Red Sea’s marine life. The initiative brings together multiple entities, including the Makkah Principality, the Saudi Red Sea Authority, the Border Guard, Jeddah Municipality, the Saudi Water Sports and Diving Federation, the National Center for Wildlife, and the General Organization for the Conservation of Coral Reefs and Turtles in the Red Sea.
The campaign targeted the removal of hazardous debris from the seabed that threatens coral reefs and marine biodiversity. Specialized diving teams carried out underwater inspections and recovery operations, after which the collected waste was carefully sorted, documented, and disposed of safely under joint technical oversight.
The first day of the initiative achieved notable success, with more than half a ton of waste and general pollutants removed from the marine environment. In addition, over 4,000 meters of abandoned fishing lines were recovered, significantly reducing risks to marine life and reinforcing efforts to preserve the Red Sea’s fragile ecosystems.
