Israeli Owned Ship Targeted in Suspected Attack in Indian Ocean
An Israeli Owned ship, was targeted in the Indian Ocean in a suspected Iranian drone attack on Friday. The ship involved was the CMA CGM Symi, owned by Singapore-based Eastern Pacific Shipping, controlled by Israeli billionaire Idan Ofer.
The attack, involved a suspected Iranian drone, an American defense official said Saturday. This drone, carried a bomb, and detonated near the Malta-flagged vessel in international waters. The explosion caused only damage to the ship without injuring any of its crew members.
Ship’s Precautions and Targeting
Before the attack, the CMA CGM Symi had its Automatic Identification System tracker switched off, a common practice when a ship faces a threat.
This practice was also observed when the vessel previously navigated through the Red Sea past Yemen. Despite these precautions, the attack still occurred.
Conflicting Reports and Ownership
Furthermore, there were initial reports that the ship attacked was the CSAV Tyndall, previously owned by Israeli tycoon Eyal Ofer’s Zodiac Maritime.
Additionally, the ship, although sustaining minor damage, continued its journey post-incident with no reported injuries. This resilience demonstrates the increasing preparedness of maritime vessels amidst rising tensions.
Accordingly, Israeli officials suspect Iran’s involvement, potentially in retaliation for Israeli actions, such as the targeting of an Iranian centrifuge production site. This incident underscores the escalating maritime tensions and the broader geopolitical conflict.
