Israeli Military Sets up Temporary Checkpoints Across Southern Syrian Towns
Israeli forces established temporary checkpoints in towns in southern Syria on Sunday, stopping and searching residents before later withdrawing from the areas.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, two Israeli military vehicles moved along the road connecting the village of Saida Al-Golan to Quneitra.
In a separate incident, an Israeli unit of approximately 150 soldiers withdrew from the eastern entrance of the village of Maariya in Daraa after setting up a temporary checkpoint and inspecting residents’ vehicles and minibuses.
Syria has accused Israel of repeatedly violating the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, which was created to separate opposing forces following the 1967 war. Damascus reiterated its demand for Israel to withdraw from occupied territory in southern Syria and from the UN-monitored demilitarized buffer zone, which Israel took control of in December 2024 following the collapse of Bashar Assad’s government.
