Irish MP Carthy Condemns Israel’s Continuous Law Breaches
In a recent session of the Irish Parliament, Member of Parliament Matt Carthy articulated a strong critique of both Hamas and Israel’s actions but particularly condemned Israel’s continuous infringements of international law.
Carthy acknowledged that Hamas violated international law on 7th October by targeting innocent civilians, an action which he stated has been universally condemned.
Israel’s Continuous Breach of International Law
However, Carthy shifted the focus to Israel, accusing the nation of breaching international law not only post October 7th, but on an almost daily basis for decades.
He listed Israel’s occupation of Palestinian land, blockading of Palestinian territory, expansion of illegal settlements, enforcement of an apartheid system, and regular attacks on Palestinian civilians as blatant violations of international law.
World Leaders’ Stance on Israel’s Defense
The MP lamented the recurring phrase ‘Israel has the right to defend itself’ used by world leaders, asserting that it has become a shield for Israel to carry on with its aggressive actions against Palestinians, including bombings of civilian infrastructure and denial of basic necessities like water.
He pointed out that despite humanitarian efforts to aid Gaza being met with military assaults, the rhetoric of ‘Palestine has the right to defend itself’ is never echoed by leaders.
Call for International Intervention
Carthy stressed the need for a strong international response to halt the atrocities, urging for immediate ceasefires and decisive international intervention leading to negotiations for a lasting peace settlement.
He emphasized that Ireland, with its history of colonialism, oppression, and conflict resolution, should be at the forefront of advocating for a sovereign and independent Palestine.
Through his impassioned speech, Carthy called for a united global stance to end the ongoing conflict and to work towards establishing a free and independent Palestine.
