Iran Invites Lebanese FM for Talks Amid Hezbollah Disarmament Plan

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi, invited his Lebanese Counterpart, Youssef Raji, for a state visit to Tehran in the near future to discuss bilateral relations, according to Reuters.

The invitation comes in a crucial time as the United States advances a diplomatic roadmap in Lebanon seeking to disarm the Iran-aligned Hezbollah group.

“Araghchi, inviting his Lebanese counterpart to discuss the development of bilateral relations and review regional and international developments, expressed confidence that the Lebanese people and government will successfully overcome existing threats and challenges,” Iran’s Foreign Ministry said.

The announcement came just a day after both Israel and Lebanon dispatched civilian envoys to the military committee overseeing their ceasefire.

This move marked a historic moment in the history of relations between the two countries, setting the stage for extensive talks between the long-time foes for the first time.

On Wednesday, Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said that Beirut was open to allowing the committee to assume a direct verification role. So, it can check Israeli allegations that Hezbollah is rearming and confirm the Lebanese army’s efforts to dismantle the group’s military infrastructure.

Israel and Lebanon reached a US-brokered ceasefire in 2024, ending over a year of conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. However, both sides have continued to exchange accusations of violating the truce since the ceasefire deal.

In August, the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, visited Beirut and stated that Lebanon should not confuse its enemies with its friends.
