Luigi Di Maio, the EU Special Representative for the Gulf, praised Saudi Arabia’s growing influence in global affairs. He emphasized the Kingdom’s crucial role in shaping international policies. Di Maio noted the importance of European Council President Charles Michel’s recent visit to Saudi Arabia. The visit aimed to prepare for the upcoming EU-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit in Brussels on October 16.
Strengthening EU-Gulf Relations
Di Maio stressed the importance of strong ties between EU and Gulf leaders. Michel, dedicated to improving EU-Gulf relations, has focused on these connections since his first visit to the Gulf two years ago, where he met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah. Since 2022, EU-Gulf relations have been strengthened, focusing on key areas like climate change, trade, investment, digitization, and sustainable supply chains.
Saudi Arabia’s Role in Global Diplomacy
Di Maio highlighted the ongoing dialogue between the EU and Saudi Arabia which aims to build mutual understanding and deepen cooperation. He pointed to Saudi Arabia’s pivotal role in global diplomacy, especially in seeking solutions for the Gaza conflict, reducing Middle East tensions, and pursuing peace in Ukraine. Closer cooperation between the EU and Saudi Arabia, he noted, is essential for addressing these challenges.
Preparatory Meeting in Riyadh
Di Maio praised the Riyadh meeting between GCC Secretary-General Jasem Al-Budaiwi and Michel “timely and constructive” for the summit. He emphasized both sides’ commitment to making the summit a success, noting that it will “send a strong signal about elevating EU-Gulf relations to a strategic level.”
Key Topics for the Summit
The Brussels summit will focus on climate action, the green transition, digital advancements, trade, investments, and visa exemptions. Additionally, the summit will address significant geopolitical challenges, particularly in the Middle East and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
