Earthquake in Southwest China Kills Two, Forces Thousands to Evacuate

A magnitude 5.2 earthquake hit China’s southwestern Guangxi region early on Monday, killing two people and prompting the evacuation of over 7,000 residents in the city of Liuzhou, according to Reuters.

Chinese authorities are currently continuing search and rescue operations, while warning of potential transport disruptions.

They also confirmed the death of two people, while stating that one person remains missing.

CCTV and the state news agency Xinhua reported that four people were taken to hospital, although none of them had life-threatening injuries.

Furthermore, thirteen buildings collapsed in the early hours of Monday following the earthquake.

Railway authorities flagged transportation disruptions while inspecting the integrity of rail infrastructure.

State media reported that communication and power networks, as well as water and gas supplies and local traffic, continued to operate normally in the affected area.
