Al-Khorayef Discusses Localization of Helicopter Manufacturing

The Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources, Mr. Bandar Al-Khorayef, met in Milan with Stefano Pontecorvo, Chairman of Leonardo, to discuss localizing helicopter component manufacturing in the Kingdom, including airframes, propellers, fins, and electronic aviation systems.

Localization of Helicopter Industry

Leonardo is considered one of the world’s leading companies in the aviation, defense, and security sectors, employing more than 53,000 people worldwide. The company is known for its contributions to important international programs such as Eurofighter and NH-90 and boasts significant production capabilities in Italy, the United Kingdom, Poland, and the United States.

The partnership between Leonardo and the Kingdom has spanned more than 50 years, during which the company has provided a wide range of platforms, systems, and services, including rescue helicopters, electronic systems, sensors, naval defense, and cyber capabilities.

The Kingdom focuses on developing the value chain in the aviation sector by enhancing supply chains for raw materials such as titanium and aluminum, and strengthening aircraft maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) services. This includes manufacturing spare parts for engines and drones, localizing the maintenance of navigation systems and aircraft structures, in addition to advancing satellite capabilities.

It is expected that the Saudi aviation sector will contribute 11.4 billion riyals to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by 2030. The visit of the Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources to “Leonardo” reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to strengthening the local aviation industry to achieve the goals of Saudi Vision 2030.
