Al-Jubeir, EU Ambassador Discuss Regional, lnt’nal Dev’t
The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al-Jubeir and the European Union EU Ambassador in KSA, Oman and Bahrain Christophe Farnaud discussed regional and international developments in Riyadh.
The EU Ambassador’s visit to KSA comes at a critical time when the world is witnessing an unstable situation due to the Gaza-Israel conflict.
Previous KSA Meetings with EU
Last January, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan bin Abdullah met with the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell.
The meeting was about the current situation in the Gaza Strip. They talked about the humanitarian efforts during their meeting.
World’s Reaction to Israel-Gaza Conflict
The current Israeli-Palestinian conflict has led to a disruption of security in the region. The crisis has escalated to the point where the world has called for action to address the ongoing situation.
Consequently, there have been numerous statements and meetings, such as the meeting between Al-Jubeir and the EU Ambassador.
Israel-Gaza Conflict
Israel launched airstrikes on Gaza after the 7th of October. The attack led to the destruction of civilian infrastructure, including residential buildings and hospitals, as stated by the United Nations (UN).
Moreover, thousands of people were killed and more than one million have been displaced, according to UN.
Gaza Humanitarian Situation
The humanitarian situation in Gaza became very hard. The EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, affirmed that 100% are experiencing food insecurity.
Moreover, Martin Griffiths, Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator stated that Gaza has become a place of death and despair.
Additionally, he said that a public health catastrophe is developing. Sewers overflow into shelters, where infectious illnesses are proliferating. Furthermore, he said that Gaza has become an uninhabitable city.
Now, the situation is worse as some countries suspended UNRWA funding. UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini said that the funding suspension puts the organization’s ongoing humanitarian activities in Gaza danger.
EU Ambassador’s Previous Meeting in KSA
Last year in October, the EU Ambassador, Christophe Farnaud visited KSA.
He was received by Jasem Mohamed Al-Budaiwi, Secretary General of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf.
During the meeting, Al-Budaiwi emphasized that the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council and the EU always seek to increase cooperation and develop relations between the two sides.
