These technologies promise to deliver safe, efficient, sustainable, and faster transportation of people and goods, boasting high technical capabilities that alleviate road congestion, improve access to remote areas, and consequently contribute to the nation’s economic and social development.

Captain Sulaiman bin Saleh Al-Muhaimeed, the Vice President of Aviation Safety and Environmental Sustainability, elaborated on the initiative. He emphasized that it includes a comprehensive roadmap placing advanced air mobility (AAM) at the forefront of the aviation industry.

AAM represents a significant transformation in the transportation sector, offering innovative solutions from small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) to Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) aircraft.

Captain Al-Muhaimeed highlighted the initiative’s role in revolutionizing passenger movement, freight transport, emergency response, medical evacuation, and disaster relief, all while prioritizing environmental sustainability. The initiative also lays the foundation for a successful AAM system, encompassing technical development, regulatory frameworks, infrastructure, and human capabilities.

Tests conducted across diverse terrains and varying climate conditions in the Kingdom have yielded positive outcomes, demonstrating the potential of advanced air mobility to reduce traffic congestion, road accidents, and contribute to health sector improvements.

Furthermore, these advancements align with Saudi Arabia’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2060.

Saudi Arabia has prioritized environmental conservation and sustainable development, highlighted by initiatives such as the Saudi Green Initiative and the Middle East Green Initiative, announced by the Crown Prince.

Environmental Sustainability in Civil Aviation

In 2022, the General Authority of Civil Aviation introduced the Environmental Sustainability Development Plan in Civil Aviation. It encompasses the “Initiative for Advanced Air Mobility in the Kingdom”.

Consequently, this initiative is a key component of the aviation sector’s strategy. It aims to set strategic directions, establish regulatory frameworks, and reduce environmental impacts.
