Iran, European Powers to Hold Critical Talks to Avert Reimposition of Sanctions

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi announced that he will meet with his European counterparts and the head of the UN nuclear watchdog chief Rafael Grossi in New York on Tuesday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, according to Reuters.
Araqchi said that diplomacy is the only solution for the dispute between Tehran and European powers over Iran’s nuclear program, according to Reuters.
He also added that it was time for the West to choose between “cooperation or confrontation.”
“They have tested Iran repeatedly and know we do not respond to the language of pressure and threat,” Araqchi said. “I hope we can find a diplomatic solution in the coming days, otherwise Tehran will take appropriate measures.”
The meeting follows the UN Security Council’s decision not to permanently lift restrictions on Iran after the three European powers, Britain, France, and Germany triggered a 30-day process in August to reimpose sanctions.
Notably, if Tehran and the Western countries fail to reach a diplomatic deal by the end of September 27, then all UN sanctions will be reimposed on Tehran.
The imposition of sanctions would have critical consequences on Tehran where the economy already struggles with crippling sanctions reimposed since 2018 after Donald Trump withdrew from the pact during his first presidential term.
On Saturday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian pledged that his country would overcome any reimposed sanctions under the “snapback” mechanism.
“Through the ‘snapback’ they block the road, but it is the brains and the thoughts that open or build the road,” Pezeshkian said.
