Germany Describes Recognition of Palestinian State as ‘Counterproductive’

A German government spokesman said on Friday that Berlin has not yet planned to recognize a Palestinian state, as such a move would further hinder the possibility of reaching a negotiated two-state solution with Israel, according to Reuters.

“A negotiated two-state solution remains our goal, even if it seems a long way off today,” spokesman said.

He also described the decision to recognize the Palestinian state as “counterproductive.”

The recognition of Palestine is more likely to come at the end of such a process, and such decisions would now be rather counterproductive,” the spokesperson added.

Italy Prioritizes Establishing Palestinian State

Similarly, Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said in July that the recognition of the state before its establishment could be ‘counterproductive’.

Meloni said that she supported the Palestinian state, but she is not in favor of recognizing it prior to establishing it, according to Al Arabiya.

“If something that doesn’t exist is recognized on paper, the problem could appear to be solved when it isn’t,” she told Italian daily La Repubblica.

Meloni’s remarks came after French President Emmanuel Macron announced his plan to recognize a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September.

On Friday, Italian Foreign Minister revealed that recognizing a Palestinian state must align with recognition of Israel by the new Palestinian entity.

Recently, several countries including Australia, United Kingdom, France, Canada and Malta have said they would recognize a Palestinian state in September.

Gaza War

Currently, Israel is facing regional and international pressure to put an end to its war in the Palestinian enclave and allow the delivery of more aid.

At the same time, the Israeli government has been facing harsh criticism from countries, nations, and individuals who considered the war as a genocide or ethnic cleansing of Palestinians.

Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War, the Israeli strikes have killed more than 62,000 Palestinians and wounded over 156,000, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Dozens of Gazans including children have lost their souls due to malnutrition throughout the war that caused unthinkable humanitarian conditions.

Rights group Amnesty International has accused Israel of enacting a “deliberate policy” of starvation in Gaza and “systematically destroying the health, well-being and social fabric of Palestinian life.”
