Malta to Recognize Palestinian State in June, Says PM

Prime Minister Robert Abela has announced that Malta will officially recognize the State of Palestine next month, ending more than four decades of hesitation, according to Al-Jazeera.

“We cannot close our eyes to this human tragedy that is getting worse every day,” Abela said during his participation at a political event on Sunday.

Abela also unveiled that the formal recognition will follow a conference on June 20, describing the move as a “moral responsibility” amid Israel’s genocide in Gaza.

Apart from this, the PM recounted his recent visit to Palestinian refugee camps in Jordan, where he met children evacuated to Malta for medical treatment.

He attempted to describe the unthinkable conditions under which Palestinians are living during a devastating war that has been killing, injuring and displacing thousands of people.

In this regard, Abela expressed Malta’s willingness to welcome pediatrician Dr Alaa Al-Najjar and her family. Al-Najjar lost nine of her ten children because of an Israeli strike on her home, while she was treating patients in a hospital in southern Gaza.

Since the beginning of Hamas-Israel War in Gaza in 2023, the Israeli strikes have killed at least 53,500 Palestinians and wounded more than 118,000, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.
